Continuing my exploration of the Kitano area, I was struck by the remarkable diversity of Western-style architecture lining the hilly streets. Each house seemed to tell its own story, reflecting the international influences that shaped Kobe when it opened as a port city in the late 19th century. The atmosphere here is truly unique—tree-lined avenues, vintage gas lamps, and homes with facades reminiscent of different corners of Europe, all set against the scenic backdrop of the Rokko mountain range.
As I wandered, I discovered mansions inspired by French, Dutch, English, and Italian designs, each meticulously preserved and often filled with period antiques and cultural exhibits. Among the standout residences is the Denmark House, a themed venue established by the Royal Danish Embassy and the Trade Council of Denmark. Inside, the Denmark House showcases the rich history and culture of Denmark, featuring highlights such as a replica Viking ship, a faithfully recreated study room of Hans Christian Andersen, and a variety of Danish-made souvenirs. The experience offers a fascinating glimpse into Scandinavian heritage right in the heart of Kobe.
Other iconic houses in Kitano include the Weathercock House, with its striking red brick and German Art Nouveau influences; the Moegi House, an elegant green mansion originally built for the American Consul-General; and the Uroko House, recognizable by its slate-tiled exterior resembling fish scales and its impressive collection of European porcelain and art[1][4][5]. Each residence not only reflects the architectural tastes of its original owners but also the cosmopolitan spirit that continues to define Kitano today.
Strolling through Kitano, I felt as if I was traveling through a living museum of international culture and design, where every house offered a new perspective and a deeper appreciation for Kobe’s rich, multicultural history.
