Something went wrong.
The moment my name was called at the Gamification World Congress in Barcelona, I honestly wasn't expecting it.
I had just given my Day 3 keynote, Maturity in Gamification: A Shift to White Hat Intrinsic Designs, pushing the industry away from the sugar-high of points, badges, and leaderboards toward something deeper and more honest.
The Rise.Global leaderboard hadn't been kind to me that year. Other brilliant people in the field were doing inspiring work, and part of me felt it would be more interesting for the audience if someone else won.
So when they announced Yu-kai Chou as Gamification Guru of the Year 2015, I walked up surprised.
Words felt insufficient, so I threw in a few dance moves. People liked them.
Palau de Congressos de Barcelona. November 10–13, 2015. 1,300 attendees. My second win after 2014, but this one felt different.
2014 felt like discovery; the industry was noticing Octalysis. 2015 felt like confirmation; the industry was choosing it, year after year, even when the algorithm wasn't leaning my way.
There's an irony worth sitting with. Gamification Guru of the Year is itself a gamified system: Rise.Global's algorithm plus community voting, which is just points plus social influence plus a dash of scarcity.
I won a Black Hat meta-game in the same year I stood on stage arguing the industry needed to graduate past Black Hat.
Maybe that's the real lesson. Sometimes the system rewards the people who stop optimizing for its surface metrics and start building the layer underneath.
The Core Drives in the room that night, looking back:
That last one is the part I carry with me. Not the trophy.
The realization that a framework born in a Taiwanese-American kid's obsession in 2003, published on a blog in 2012, had reached a room in Spain where strangers already spoke its language and were asking me to autograph their books.
Spain was the first country that wasn't mine that made Octalysis feel like it had a home.
