In "10,000 Hours of Play," Yu-kai Chou positions Sun Yat-sen as the ultimate example of Step 5: Build Your Alliances. He didn’t just recruit followers — he unified rival factions under one vision, turning a scattered rebellion into a force that reshaped history.
After a decade of failed uprisings, exiles, and near-death experiences, Sun did something only a master Alliance Builder could pull off. On August 20, 1905, in Tokyo, he merged his Xingzhonghui (Revive China Society) with the Guangfuhui (Restoration Society), the Huaxinghui, and other revolutionary groups into a single organization: the Tongmenghui — the United League. Song Jiaoren co-founded it with him.
The Tongmenghui gave the revolution something it had always lacked: unity. It had leadership, structure, and a shared oath. This was the foundation that made the 1911 Xinhai Revolution possible. The Tongmenghui would later evolve into the Kuomintang — the party that governed China for decades.
