Before dawn on June 16, 1922, troops of Sun Yat-sen's own ally, Guangdong commander Chen Jiongming, moved to shell the presidential residence in Guangzhou. Warned about two hours ahead, Sun slipped out in disguise, reached the navy on the Pearl River, and took refuge aboard the gunboat Yongfeng.
He stayed on the water for nearly two months. Chiang Kai-shek came down from Shanghai to join him on board, a show of loyalty that later helped make Chiang his pick to run the Whampoa academy.
The small loyalist fleet traded fire with shore batteries and held out for a counterattack that never came together; on August 9 Sun withdrew to Hong Kong aboard a British warship and went on to Shanghai.
At 55, this was the most personal betrayal of his career. Chen wanted a federated Guangdong; Sun wanted a unified China, and the split cost him his base.
What the failure bought was his last great redesign: alliance with the Soviets, a rebuilt Kuomintang, and an officer school so no borrowed army could hold him hostage again.
The navy renamed the Yongfeng the Zhongshan, Sun's Chinese name, after his death, and the restored ship now sits in its own museum in Wuhan. In 10,000 Hours of Play terms, the setback near hour nine thousand is the one that forces the rebuild.
