On October 25, 1915, in Tokyo, 48-year-old Sun Yat-sen married 22-year-old Soong Ching-ling. The couple signed a marriage covenant in three copies before the lawyer Wada Mizu, and Umeya Shokichi, the Nagasaki-born film entrepreneur who financed Sun's revolution for nearly 30 years, hosted a wedding celebration at his residence in the Okubo district.
The timing says a lot about where Sun stood. The Second Revolution against Yuan Shikai had collapsed in 1913, and he was back in Japanese exile with his party scattered.
Soong Ching-ling, an American-educated daughter of his longtime backer Charlie Soong, had taken over from her sister as his secretary. Her parents opposed the match so fiercely that they sailed to Japan to stop it, and failed.
The partnership held for the rest of his life. She was with him when rebel guns drove them from Guangzhou in 1922, on the platform at the Whampoa academy's opening in 1924, and at his deathbed in Beijing in 1925.
She then carried his political legacy for another 56 years.
