On November 28, 1924, Sun Yat-sen spoke to a packed auditorium at the Kobe Prefectural Girls' High School, invited by the Kobe Chamber of Commerce and four other local organizations. The lecture became known as the Pan-Asianism speech, and it was the last major public address of his life.
His argument set two paths side by side: a Western "rule of might" resting on force, and an Eastern "rule of right" resting on benevolence and virtue. He closed by asking his hosts, pointedly, whether Japan would end up the hawk of Western might or the bulwark of Eastern right.
History answered badly, which is partly why the speech is still argued over a century later.
Sun was dying as he delivered it. He had left Guangzhou three weeks earlier to negotiate China's reunification with the northern leaders, routing through Japan on his way to Tianjin.
Within four months he was dead in Beijing. The man who had started out lecturing small rooms of skeptical emigrants ended his run filling halls in a foreign country.
The school is gone; the Hyogo Prefectural Government offices now stand on the site, with a plaque marking the spot. As a closing scene for a 10,000 Hours of Play journey, it holds up: the final skill a master builds is the ability to hand the question to the next generation.
