On March 31, 2016, Elon Musk stepped onto the stage at the Tesla Design Studio, 3203 Jack Northrop Avenue in Hawthorne, California, and unveiled the Model 3, an electric sedan billed at $35,000 before incentives.
By the time he spoke that evening, more than 115,000 people had already put down $1,000 deposits without ever seeing the car. Within 24 hours, reservations passed 180,000.
The Model 3 completed the "master plan" Musk had published ten years earlier: build an expensive sports car, use the proceeds to build a more affordable car, then use those proceeds to build a mass-market one. The Roadster funded the Model S, and the Model S and X funded this.
A ten-year plan executed in sequence is rare in any industry. Each vehicle taught Tesla the skills the next one required: battery packs, large-scale manufacturing, software, charging infrastructure.
The reveal in this studio was less a product launch than a level-up screen for a decade of grinding.
