May 25, 2012. The International Space Station's robotic arm captures a SpaceX Dragon capsule and berths it to the station — the first commercial spacecraft ever to dock with the ISS.
From this building in Hawthorne — a 550,000-square-foot factory that was once a Boeing 747 fuselage assembly plant — Elon's team built the only American-made spacecraft capable of reaching the station after the Shuttle's retirement.
NASA had been paying Russia $76M per seat to fly Soyuz. SpaceX undercut that price aggressively and built the only domestic alternative.
The framing the headlines missed: this wasn't a stunt. It was a procurement win that opened a multi-billion-dollar commercial cargo and crew market — the recurring revenue that quietly financed Starship development.
The mastery move isn't the launch. It's recognizing that "go to space" is a product market with budgets and buyers, not a moonshot category.
The right question wasn't "can we get there?" It was "who's paying for the ticket?"
