On April 7, 2022, Tesla threw the "Cyber Rodeo," a grand opening party for up to 15,000 guests at Gigafactory Texas, the plant at 1 Tesla Road in Austin that had also become the company's new headquarters. Musk took the stage in a black cowboy hat to celebrate the start of Texas-built Model Y deliveries at the roughly $1.1 billion site.
The factory is one of the largest buildings in the world, and it was designed to build not only the Model Y but the Cybertruck that followed. Tesla expected the site to grow to around 10,000 workers.
Fourteen years before this party, Tesla nearly died. The company closed an emergency funding round on Christmas Eve 2008 with days of cash left.
The distance between that night and a 15,000-person factory festival is what compounding execution looks like over a decade and a half.
In 10,000 Hours of Play terms, Giga Texas is late-game content. The reward for surviving the early levels is that building world-scale infrastructure starts to look almost routine.
