On April 20, 2023, the first fully integrated Starship lifted off from the orbital launch mount at Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas. The stack of Booster 7 and Ship 24 stood 121 meters tall, and its 33 Raptor engines made it the most powerful rocket ever flown, breaking a record the Soviet N1 had held for half a century.
Less than four minutes later, the vehicle was destroyed. Several engines failed, the rocket lost control before stage separation, and the flight termination system ended the mission.
The liftoff also tore up the launch pad, which SpaceX admitted it had not expected.
None of this counted as failure inside SpaceX. The company said beforehand it would measure success "by how much we can learn," and Musk had put the odds of reaching orbit at around 50 percent.
Seven months later the second Starship flew farther, and the program kept iterating from there.
This is deliberate practice at industrial scale: fly, gather data, fix, fly again. As 10,000 Hours of Play argues, mastery belongs to those willing to fail in ways others find unacceptable, then treat each failure as tuition.
