In "10,000 Hours of Play," Yu-kai Chou describes young Elon Musk as "the right player in the wrong game, like Mega Man struggling in a Mario 64 world."
At Waterkloof House Preparatory School in Pretoria, the young Musk found that despite his overwhelming intellectual powers, the social hierarchy was brutally unforgiving.
He was regularly beaten by bullies — sometimes badly enough to spend a week in the hospital. One beating fractured his nose so severely that he needed corrective surgery thirty years later.
The worst part wasn't the physical violence.
The bullies targeted his best friend and forced him to stop hanging out with Elon. Then they coerced that same friend to betray him — luring him out of hiding into another beating.
Decades later, Musk said: "I never want to be alone… I don't want to be alone." The loneliness of those school years left a permanent mark.
