In "10,000 Hours of Play," Yu-kai Chou highlights how Elon Musk completed his "inaugural business quest" as a young teenager.
At age eleven, living with his engineer father in Pretoria, Musk got his first computer — a Commodore VIC-20. With no friends to play with outdoors, he poured himself into his new digital companion.
He taught himself programming in BASIC, working through the manual in three days instead of the intended six months.
At just twelve years old, he completed his first business quest (Step 6): he created Blastar, a space-themed video game where players navigated a spaceship to defeat an alien freighter. He sold it for $500 to PC and Office Technology magazine (roughly $1,400 in today's dollars).
His powerful learning-centric attributes (Step 2) — intellectual curiosity, learning agility, and learn-use conversion — had transformed a lonely kid with a cheap computer into a teenage game developer and entrepreneur.
