On October 27, 2022, Elon Musk closed his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, headquartered at 1355 Market Street in San Francisco, paying $54.20 a share. The day before, he had strolled into this lobby carrying a porcelain sink and posted the video with the caption "Entering Twitter HQ - let that sink in!"
The path to closing was anything but smooth. Musk signed the deal in April 2022, spent months trying to walk away, was sued by Twitter to force completion, and finally closed just before the case went to trial.
In July 2023 he renamed the platform X.
Whatever you think of the outcome, the move fits a pattern that runs through Musk's whole career: he commits enormous resources to arenas where he has no track record, then learns in public. Running a social network drew on none of his rocketry or manufacturing skill trees, and his first year in this building was a very visible tutorial level.
In the framework of 10,000 Hours of Play, this is a player with maxed-out stats in one domain voluntarily starting a new character.
The skills that transfer are not technical. They are conviction, capital, and the tolerance for looking foolish while you learn.
